First off I want to start with a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Becky of Becky Helmer Designs! This was her THIRD Treasury Challenge win! WAY TO GO BECKY! Since she was recently featured here on the blog she so generously offered to pay it forward to another deserving team member.
The lucky recipient is........
I have been fascinated with this shop for quite a while now and so I took this opportunity to see if we could take a little peek behind the scenes. Lucky for us, HerArtSheLoves of RobotsAreAwesome so kindly agreed to talk to us about her art, her shop, her inspirations, hopes and dreams. Keep reading to find out how it all began and how Alton Brown fits into it all.
~ My Interview with Robots Are Awesome ~
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?
Part digital illustrator, part sculpture, pure geek.
I make robots, the decorative kind that like to stand around, not the skynet kind.
What inspired you to open your shop?
I've worked online for others in other forms for years, I finally had the chance to work and create entirely for myself.
Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?
Right now... if I'm not making a robot, I'm promoting a robot or thinking about a new style of robot.
It's hard to turn off the brain when creative hits.
Where, who or what does your influence come from?
Firstly, my mother buying me mother polymer clay when I girl and letting make whatever I want. Geekery, love of all manner of sci-fi, Doctor Who, Futurama, etc... if there is a show with a robot sidekick, I've probably seen it and love.
What inspires you to be creative?
The opportunity to make something with my hands, to walk away from the interwebs and get hands on with clay, wire, paint. Get messy, get cute.
The challenge to then take a good photo of it!
How do you get out of a creative rut?
Well, to quote Alton Brown... just walk away, just walk away.
When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?
Oh, childhood, drawing, sculpting, the rise of the digital age sort of made that fade away. Training in graphic design brought it back, but getting hands on again... *little light blub appears above my head
Can you describe your creative process for us?
An idea forms for a robot, a different kind of robot wedding cake topper, a business card holder, etc... I hold onto that idea for days and then jump on it with clay, wire and paint if needed.
What is your most cherished handmade possession?
Gosh, more than one.... a clay cat bought at a craft show years ago, that kitty kept the handmade bug alive... a strange little blue ballerina alien magnet I made in my teens, to remind me I love kooky and a colorful blanket my grandmother crocheted for me as a baby.
Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?
I love custom commissions, I want more of those. I would like to see more robot 'adoptions' as I call it.
Where would you like to be in ten years?
I want to keep working with my hands, keep sculpting, making awesome things for awesome people.
Who are your favourite shops to browse on Etsy?
Oh, so many...
What is your best advice to newbie Etsian's just opening their shops?
It takes time, no really, it takes time. Do not fall for snake oil salesmen, it takes time.
You don't have to be on every social network, be where you enjoy it!
Where else other then Etsy can you be found on the net?
New robots arrive in the shop on Tuesdays & Thursdays.
Sneak Peeks Photos arrive online Wednesdays & Fridays.
I freakin' LOVE custom orders.
Do you have any coupon codes that you would like to share with our readers?
Hmmm... I would like some holiday adoptions! How about...
