~ My Interview with Flyou ~
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?
My name is Laura, I'm 26, I live in Nashville, Tennessee. I love creating art, in any form- whether it be jewelry, music, painting, etc... art controls the better parts of my brain! My shop features jewelry based on my love for geometric, shiny, and sparkly things!
What inspired you to open your shop?
One day I decided to get off of the couch, head to the craft store, and teach myself how to make jewelry! I made a few necklaces, wore them to work, and before I knew it, I had co-workers buying my designs right off of my neck! It wasn't long after that, I decided to create! create! create!- and open my own shop!
Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?
I have been singing since I was very young- which eventually lead me to hosting a karaoke night at the bar I bartend at! My regulars often refer to me as Ariel, because I have been known to sing Part of Your World from time to time. And because I have red hair. =)
Where, who or what does your influence come from?
I like being on stage, so I design a lot of necklaces and earrings that I think would look great in the spotlight. If you've been to my shop, you'll notice I use a lot of shiny and sparkly materials to create my jewelry!
What inspires you to be creative?
My aspirations to be my own boss! I hope one day to make a living off of my creations.
How do you get out of a creative rut?
Pandora! I normally put on the Regina Spektor station, sit down at my creation-station, and stare at the materials I have to work with until something comes to me. It usually doesn't take too long when listening to Regina Spektor's music.
When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?
My mom recognized the artist in me at a young age and enrolled me in weekend art classes, piano lessons, dance classes, everything you can think of- I did it all!
Can you describe your creative process for us?
It's different every day! I think my favorite jewelry I've ever created came from a bad idea that I reworked into a good one. =)
What is your most cherished handmade possession?
I painted a large, vibrant, pixelated portrait of Brandon Flowers from The Killers for a college art class assignment. I spent hours upon hours on it- much more than I should have. I loved it! My professor gave me extra credit on it, just because he liked it so much ( which was a huge compliment!).
Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?
I definitely want to sell more! Right now I've been getting a lot of nibbles, but not enough bites! I hope that if I keep working hard and get my shop name out there, I will get more sales.
Where would you like to be in ten years?
I'd love to have my own successful boutique full of jewelry, clothing, and art that I have designed!
Who are your favourite shops to browse on Etsy?
ChristineKrainock, BlueBirdsFlyBoutique, and of course- all the members of Etsian Artists! We've got some rad artists in our group.
What is your best advice to newbie Etsian's just opening their shops?
Well I still feel like a newbie myself! But I would say shop fluidity is key ( something I'm working on myself)! Also, be present on Etsy and social networks! Don't stop, stay active!
Where else other then Etsy can you be found on the net?
My Page on Facebook iswww.facebook.com/flyouOnline. Coupon codes, giveaways, pictures of my work, etc can all be found there!
Do you have any coupon codes that you would like to share with our readers?
