Sunday Feature ♥ MadScientists Designs

FREE SHIPPING Miles To Go - OOAK Steampunk Coil Ring 007

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?
Like me, my shop is quite eclectic. I love to try new things and have many interests so my inventory reflects that. I love the esthetics of Steampunk, I also love a good sense of fun and humor as long as it's not malicious. My work reflects all of my moods so you'll find fun, dangly, pink earrings right beside Gothic black rose earrings and everything in between. I also introduced art recently and have been having a lot of fun colorizing black and white copyright-free images. Take a look around... You can never be quite sure what you'll find.

What inspired you to open your shop?
I started out with some used vintage vacuum tubes that I wanted to find a use for... My shop is the organic evolution of that original idea of recycling or upcycling the vacuum tubes.

Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?
I enjoy photography and reading. We just got a new camera for Christmas, so there may be photographs entering the mix soon.

Where, who or what does your influence come from?
Well, I must say that several of my adventures in creativity started with a team challenge or a custom request... it's been very influential in pushing me to stretch my skills and my imagination. I've also been influenced by Steampunk and Gothic elements.

FREE SHIPPING Steampunk Decoupage Earrings 003 Gaze

What inspires you to be creative?
I find inspiration in everything and everywhere. I am very visual, so I like browsing and finding new ways to do things and new techniques to use... Interesting new ways to imagine an object into jewelry. I ask a lot of what ifs.

How do you get out of a creative rut?
I haven't really experienced a creative rut so much as a creative block at this point. I just let the problem roll around in my head until my subconscious solves the creative problem I've encountered.

FREE SHIPPING Gothic Cross Earrings 002 Goth Vampire Victorian Silver Red by MadScientistsDesigns

When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?
I've always liked art and drawing. I had never tried jewelry as artistic expression until early in 2010. Then I discovered that I really liked making jewelry art and all of the different styles to explore.

What is your most cherished handmade possession?
On one of my Etsy teams, Artists For Animals, we had a Pay It Forward game and I recieved the most amazing personalized journal from Boitifole. It is wonderful! I love it!

FREE SHIPPING Elven Wear Golden Dreams Wirewrapped Adjustable Cuff 001

Who are your favourite shops to browse on Etsy?
Wow. What a difficult choice. There are so many shops that have great things to look at. I love exploring MandarinMoon for the amazing mozaic and clay work, amechanicalmind because I just love the jewelry, RobotsAreAwesome because it is so true, they are! I also love reclaim2fame who makes amazing recycled robots, creaturesfromel who makes gorgeous sculptures, freeheart1 makes terrific polymer clay pieces, and TheVerificationCat for the most hilarious illustrated explanations of verification words around.

What is your best advice to newbie Etsian's just opening their shops?
Always be true to yourself. I know it sounds cliche, but you have to love what you do and have fun with it. Don't be afraid to try new things and stretch yourself. Find a good Etsy information team , for example, Etsy Success, to read up on all of the ins and outs of owning an Etsy business (you can also ask for advice or ask questions).

The lucky recipient is........

Gold Garrick Robot Sculpture - Close Up

I have been fascinated with this shop for quite a while now and so I took this opportunity to see if we could take a little peek behind the scenes. Lucky for us, HerArtSheLoves of RobotsAreAwesome so kindly agreed to talk to us about her art, her shop, her inspirations, hopes and dreams.  Keep reading to find out how it all began and how Alton Brown fits into it all.

~ My Interview with Robots Are Awesome ~

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?

Part digital illustrator, part sculpture, pure geek.
I make robots, the decorative kind that like to stand around, not the skynet kind.

Pink Pinker Handstand Acrobat Mini Grungy Robot Sculpture - Polymer Clay, Wire, Paint

What inspired you to open your shop?

I've worked online for others in other forms for years, I finally had the chance to work and create entirely for myself.

Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?

Right now... if I'm not making a robot, I'm promoting a robot or thinking about a new style of robot.
It's hard to turn off the brain when creative hits.

Red Rigby Angel Bot Christmas Ornament Robot Sculpture - Clay, Wire

Where, who or what does your influence come from?
Firstly, my mother buying me mother polymer clay when I girl and letting make whatever I want. Geekery, love of all manner of sci-fi, Doctor Who, Futurama, etc... if there is a show with a robot sidekick, I've probably seen it and love.

What inspires you to be creative?
The opportunity to make something with my hands, to walk away from the interwebs and get hands on with clay, wire, paint. Get messy, get cute.
The challenge to then take a good photo of it!

Cameron Cupid Robot Sculpture - Polymer Clay, Wire, Paint

How do you get out of a creative rut?
Well, to quote Alton Brown... just walk away, just walk away.

When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?

Oh, childhood, drawing, sculpting, the rise of the digital age sort of made that fade away. Training in graphic design brought it back, but getting hands on again... *little light blub appears above my head

Robot Sculpture Pink Pooky Grungy Bot - Polymer Clay, Paint, Wire

Can you describe your creative process for us?

An idea forms for a robot, a different kind of robot wedding cake topper, a business card holder, etc... I hold onto that idea for days and then jump on it with clay, wire and paint if needed.

MADE TO ORDER Wedding Cake Topper Robot Bride and Groom 7 inch - Polymer and Wire

What is your most cherished handmade possession?

Gosh, more than one.... a clay cat bought at a craft show years ago, that kitty kept the handmade bug alive... a strange little blue ballerina alien magnet I made in my teens, to remind me I love kooky and a colorful blanket my grandmother crocheted for me as a baby.

Robot Sculpture Purple Poppy Mini Cat - Polymer Clay, Wire, Paint

Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?
I love custom commissions, I want more of those. I would like to see more robot 'adoptions' as I call it.

Where would you like to be in ten years?
I want to keep working with my hands, keep sculpting, making awesome things for awesome people.

Who are your favourite shops to browse on Etsy?
Oh, so many...

What is your best advice to newbie Etsian's just opening their shops?
It takes time, no really, it takes time. Do not fall for snake oil salesmen, it takes time.
You don't have to be on every social network, be where you enjoy it!

Gray Gil Grungy Bot Robot Sculpture - Clay, Wire, Paint

Where else other then Etsy can you be found on the net?

Last week CatHousePrints won our Treasury Challenge!  CONGRATULATIONS KRIS!!!  Since she has been featured here before she so generously offered to pay it forward to Allie of HuneyBunny.

~ My Interview With Allie of HuneyBunny ~

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?
Shop: Im still rather new to ETSY. I have a shop full of (what I hope is) whimsical and fun and affordable art.
Me: I am a 20something artist that paints according to her obsessions. I get a bug to paint in gray or purple or to paint giraffes or Abe Lincoln.

What inspired you to open your shop?
I opened my shop in the Spring after I quit a sales job that made me a little crazy to remember how to live a moderately stress free life. I had meant to open the shop forever, but I never had the time to get around to it.

Sugar Skull Art. Whimsical Dia De Los Muertos Painting. Original Oil on Canvas work from Allie Kelley.
Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?
Other than painting and crafting, I am a : Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, Arm Chair Historian, mother to a dog named Goober and a kitty named Captain, a wife, avid audio book listener, and an ETSY addict.

Where, who or what does your influence come from?
I never formally studied art, though I have always piddeled in it. My influences come from the same thing that inspires me: local art, hi-fructose magazine, and anything I find pretty or interesting.

What inspires you to be creative?
Maybe its the 5 am speaking, but I think that Im sorta half goldfish and half pittbull. I am easily distracted by something shiny. (Narwhals, Abe Lincoln, and Giraffes with mustaches! Anything I find interesting) and then once I'm really captivated by something I cant let it go. I hold on until Ive created over and over again and I am obsessed with two or three more shiny objects!

Giraffe Postcard. Whimsical Giraffe with Mustache and Combover.

How do you get out of a creative rut?
When I have a creative rut, I try to doodle it out. I carry around a sketch pad and I just use it for anything. Eventually, I'll stumble on something that I will NEED to take further.

Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?
This time next year I hope myshop will have a steady following, I'll have at least 100 items posted, and I'll have cleaned it up and streamlined it.

PINK LINCOLN ART Print. 5x7 Print of an Original Oil on Canvas Painting. Whimsical Artwork of Allie Kelley

Where would you like to be in ten years?
In ten years I hope to have a career that pays me to be creative. I keep telling myself I am going back to school. Hopefully I will, and it will make all the difference.

What is your best advice to newbie Etsian's just opening their shops?
My best advice to newbies on ETSY is: find a great team to join. Joining EAWT and other teams has made me work harder and work smarter on ETSY.

Where else other then Etsy can you be found on the net?
Other than ETSY you can find me on FaceBook:

Owl Drawing - Morning Light Snuggles. 2 Owls on a spring morning.

Special Thanks to CatHousePrints for donating this interview. special Apologizes to the readers of this interview. I didnt have my coffee before I wrote it.

This week we owe a big CONGRATULATIONS out to Natural Flipside for winning last weeks Treasury Challenge!  You may remember seeing her featured here and reading her wonderful interview not too long ago, if you missed it then you can catch it HERE!  Jessica so kindly offered to pay it forward by giving her winning feature to Deb of One Barefoot Gypsy.

OOAK Silver NECKLACE & Heart Shaped "Sweetheart" Cutwork Pendant - Simple Elegance -SALE

I had an opportunity to speak with Deb and find out a bit more about how it all began, how it is and how she wants it to be.  Sit back, relax and get to know the artist behind the name One Barefoot Gypsy...

~ My Interview with Deb ~

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your shop?
I am a 54 year old mother, wife and grandmother who is raising her 3 grandchildren (all under 4). I have my own antique/vintage store in the smallest historic district in Kentucky, Hanson, where I design displays of everything from Vintage Linens to Old shelf paper, wrapping paper and greeting cards. I 've always loved creating and finding interesting ways of self expression. Purchasing a book on jewelry making, I thought I would get to begin making pieces right away, but the book sat for over 5 years, unopened, until I finally did read it and began learning how to make what I envisioned. I incorporate Vintage Glass, Crystal, Brass and other old materials into the new pieces I bring to Etsy.

OOAK Handmade Glass Beaded NECKLACE - "Autumn Harvest" - Czech Glass Button & Glass Leaves - SALE

Besides designing & creating things, what do you do?
Besides my jewelry and antique etsy shops, I also have the actual store that I mentioned earlier and together with raising my grandchildren, I find little free time of late. When I do sneak out a bit, I love to travel, find small out of the way towns with great little shops and browse. I enjoy reading and learning new things, no matter what arena they fall into. Home decorating is another passion.

What inspired you to open your shop?
A friend told me about some success she was having with Etsy and after trying to sell My handcrafted Jewelry on Ebay with little to no luck, I felt it was time to try a new venue. I first began the Miss Willie's shop here, where I sell Vintage items and then started One Barefoot Gypsy

OOAK Handmade Silver NECKLACE - Huge VINTAGE Pink Rhinestone Pendant - 34" Long Chain

Where, who or what does your influence come from?
I am influenced by all Victoriana, the Art Deco and Art Nouveau Movements and more. The delicate pieces of Victorian Jewelry seemed so perfectly feminine to me. Glass and Crystal also have an extremely feminine appeal to me, so blending these seemed perfectly sensible when I began to create my pieces.

How do you get out of a creative rut?
I have not yet had a "creative rut", thankfully, but I know that purchasing a few new beads, or fabulous glass stones will get me thinking and planning a new piece within moments of the package being ripped open!

When did you first discover that you were or wanted to be an artist?
I don't think I ever really thought of what I loved to make, or create, specifically as "art", but I knew that it was much like my poetry and it showed the world a bit of what was in my soul, my desires etc. and that I HAD to do it. There is no choice. I am always making something!

Large VINTAGE Blue Glass Rhinestone NECKLACE with Aged Brass - "Fly Away Home" - Vintage Components, One-of-a-Kind

Can you describe your creative process for us?
My creative process runs the gamut, from setting stones and cabs on the front porch of my antique shop to pulling a few cases of things onto my screen porch overlooking the rolling hills and horses behind my home and simply starting with a color. Once the color is chosen, deciding what type of piece...earrings, necklace, bracelet etc. is next and then choosing the findings and other pieces that will make the "whole". Once in a while, I will not be happy with the first outcome and will begin again, until satisfaction in the piece has been attained.

What inspires you to be creative?
I CANNOT start a project unless I feel creative though. I know when I am and I definitely know when I am NOT.

What is your most cherished handmade possession?
My most cherished handmade possession would be any of the ceramic or porcelain pieces that my mother made. She passed away when I was in my 30's, after my father had been gone for several years and I felt so alone. Having these few items that she took pride in, brings me closer to the artist in her that she never knew existed.

OOAK Handmade Brooch Pin - "Regal Affection" - Silver Plated Pierced Vintage Base - Glass Opals, Rhinestones & Lg Glass Focal Amethyst

Where do you see or want your shop to be this time next year?
I would love to see my Etsy shop being profitable by next year as well as having many more available items in new and unusual forms. I would love to keep branching out and using different items to create with.

Where would you like to be in ten years?
In 10 years I hope to still be able to do what I am doing now, but MORE and in other venues as well. I want to take my jewelry to Art Fairs and Juried Shows. Perhaps have my own line of jewelry in the marketplace that is being produced for sale in shops around the world!

What is your best advice to newbie Etsian's just opening their shops?
Being fairly new to Etsy myself, my best advise would be to find someone who has it all figured out and is bringing in a large profit to ask their questions of. LOL I suppose right now, with the little knowledge I have, I would tell them NOT to give up and to keep trying and learning...eventually, it will pay off. (at least I am still hoping it will! )

OOAK Handmade Chartreuse Ruffled Bracelet/Cuff - "Lemonade & Carmels" - Topaz Stones, Antique Lace, Velvet - SALE

Where else other then Etsy can you be found on the net?
I have the two Etsy stores, I also sell on Ebay under pasts_presents, but am not as active there as I was for the past 11 years. My facebook page can be found under MissWillie's and we are planning to open a webstore that will use the Barefoot Gypsy name to consolidate both Miss Willie's Antiques and the Jewelry line sold under the Gypsy name now.

Do you have any coupon codes that you would like to share with our readers?
This Fall, buyers can use the coupon code FALLFREE to gain Free Continental United States shipping! I am also lowering some prices now for early Holiday shopping and will continue to bring sales and specials right through the holiday season. There is no better time to buy than now, with lots of new pieces in the shop, the sales and the FREE SHIPPING!

Thank~you Deb for sharing all of this with us!  I will now leave you with Jessica of Natural Flipsides fabulous winning Treasury below....
